The penitentiary was opened in 1829 and it revolutionized the whole concept of prison by introducing the concept of penitence. The penitence was evoked by confining each prisoner in solitude, with personal outdoor area for each. The model was criticised by many as inhuman and was undoubtedly very expensive, thus leading to its closure in 1970. Being closed for nearly 25 year, it was opened in1994 for public tours. Now tourists can enter into the prison cells and hear different stories of former inmates.
